An attenuator performs the opposite function of an amplifier. While an amplifier provides signal gain, an attenuator reduces signal strength (provides loss), or gain less than 1. Having a signal that is too strong can cause the same kind of reception problems as having a signal that is too weak.
A combination of attenuators may be used together to create the exact signal loss needed.
